When you need a custom mold

A custom mold is worth it when no existing bottle matches your shape and the bottle is central to the brand. It is usually opened for flagship or signature products with ongoing volume.

The development steps

  1. Define the concept, capacity and dimensions

Timeline and MOQ

Mold development commonly takes about 25 days after design approval, and orders with a new mold typically start around 10,000 pieces. The mold is then maintained for repeat production. See the mold service and lead-time calculator.

What is defined before the mold is cut

The most valuable stage is the work done before any steel is machined: the exact capacity, the proportions, the neck finish and the cap fit are all fixed in the engineering drawing and reviewed on a 3D prototype. Changes at this stage are inexpensive, whereas a change after the mold is cut means rework. We also confirm the intended fill and liquid at this point, since a bottle that will be filled with a colored or translucent product should be designed around how the finished item will appear.

For a brand that wants an exclusive shape but is not yet certain of demand, a practical route is to launch on a decorated existing mold to validate the fragrance, and open the custom mold only once the volume is confirmed, protecting the tooling investment.
